State Class AA boys' track and field: Alexandria's Gorghuber fifth, relay sixth at state

Photo by Matt Steichen / Farmington Independent Dan Gorghuber cleared a hurdle in the 300-meter intermediate finals, finishing fifth as the Alexandria’s boys’ team placed 33rd in the team standings.

Card senior Dan Gorghuber earned a fifth place finish in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles event at the State Class AA boys’ track and field meet on Saturday, helping Alexandria to its 33rd place finish at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Gorghuber qualified for the finals with a fourth place finish in the preliminaries, running a 39.62. He bettered that time with a 39.03 in the finals to finish fifth. Rilwan Alowonle of Park was the state champion in 37.32.

Along with his solo event, Gorghuber also was the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay for Alexandria that finished sixth. He, along with seniors Mike Huss, Ben Vickstrom and Felix Coleman, ran a 3:23.04 in the preliminaries for a seventh place qualifying time, then clocked in at 3:23.86 in the finals. Stillwater set a new Class AA and Minnesota all-time record as they finished first in 3:16.69. The old record was 3:17.39, also set by Stillwater back in 1997.

Vickstrom qualified for the state meet in two individual events – the 100 and 200-meter dashes, but didn’t make the finals in either event. He finished 12th in the prelims of the 100 with a time of 11.44, as Ayuk Tambe of Blaine won the event in 11.17.

In the 200-meter dash, Vickstrom was 10th in the preliminaries in 23.15, with Anthony Gustafson of Faribault winning in 22.25.
