Section 6AA-West baseball: Season ends for Minnewaska
A late-game rally by Melrose netted eight runs and ended the baseball season for Minnewaska in its Section 6AA-West playoff opener.
The Lakers, who finished the season at 14-6, grabbed an early 1-0 lead after Blake Helmick tripled and was driven home by Kameron Drange in the first inning.
But the Dutchmen came storming back, scoring five runs in the fourth as 11 batters saw action against Minnewaska pitcher Dustin Helmick.
Melrose continued to add to their lead with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth before winning pitcher Carter Sawyer allowed the Lakers three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Sawyer struck out 11 batters in the game and allowed Minnewaska just six hits.
Shane Bosek and Drange each had two RBIs in the game, with Bosek and B. Helmick having two hits apiece. One of Helmick’s hits was a triple.
D. Helmick took the loss as he allowed five runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out two.
