Section 6A individual tennis: Minnewaska's Blair, Hoffman advance to state

The Lakers' doubles team was second in 6A individual play

Minnewaska doubles Dustin Hoffman and Tanner Blair earned a spot in the State Class A tennis tournament next week after finishing second in the Section 6A individual tournament Tuesday.

The Laker duo opened tournament play with a bye, while teammates Tanner Holten and Jacob Braaten earned a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Holten and Braaten then fell in three sets in the quarterfinals, with Hoffman and Blair picking up a three set victory.

The winning twosome then earned a semifinal winner over Jordan Beumer and Jared Beumer of St. Cloud Cathedral in a hard-fought 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) match to reach the championship where they fell in three sets to Aaron Zimmer and Sam Wittwer of Foley.

Lakers singles player Ben Peters had to settle for third as he ended his high school career.

Peters opened his tournament action with a bye, while teammate Tony Kruger was ousted in the first round with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Jeremy Welters of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.

In the quarterfinals, Peters earned a straight set win before falling in the semifinals to Ethan-Ratliff-Crain of Benson/KMS.

In the third place match, Peters defeated Mark Shirley of St. Cloud Cathedral.

Hoffman and Blair will open state tournament action next Thursday, June 9, at 10 a.m. at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

SINGLES

FIRST ROUND: Ben Peters, Minnewaska, had a bye; Jeremy Welters, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, def. Tony Kruger, Minnewaska, 6-1, 6-0.

QUARTERFINALS: Peters def. Tom Wittwer, Foley, 7-5, 6-1.

SEMIFINALS: Ethan Ratliff-Crain, Benson/KMS, def. Peters 6-2, 6-0.

THIRD PLACE: Peters def. Mark Shirley, Cathedral, 6-2, 6-3.

DOUBLES

FIRST ROUND: Tanner Holten-Jacob Braaten, Minnewaska, def. Josh Treptau-Ethen Sietsema, New London-Spicer, 6-0, 6-2; Dylan Hoffman-Tanner Blair, Minnewaska, bye.

QUARTERFINALS: Hoffman-Blair def. Jayme Moten-Seth Nelson, New London-Spicer 5-7, 6-3, 6-3; Jordan Beumer-Jared Beurmer, Cathedral, def. Holten-Braaten 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

SEMIFINALS: Hoffman-Blair def. Beumer-Beumer 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

CHAMPIONSHIP: Aaron Zimmer-Sam Wittwer, Foley, def. Hoffman-Blair 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
