Baseball: Curry gives Miltona walk-off victory

The Miltona Tigers watched a late lead disappear this past Saturday before winning on a walk-off hit by Alexandria’s Cody Curry in the 10th.

The Tigers led 7-2 over Brandon-Evansville before the Bluedogs battled back to tie the game at seven apiece in the ninth. Colin Erickson came on for the Tigers to keep things tied when he retired the only man he faced in the ninth.

Miltona went scoreless in the bottom of the inning before Erickson struck out the side in the top of the 10th. That set the stage for the Tigers in the bottom of the inning. Mark Whiting started a rally with a drag bunt before Tyler Walsh followed with a bunt single of his own.

Ryan Emter blooped a single over a drawn-in infield to load the bases for Curry. The Southwest Minnesota State infielder didn’t miss his pitch, sending a line drive over the head of the Bluedogs’ left fielder for the game winner.

Curry and Emter both finished with three hits apiece for Miltona. Tyler Erickson, Sam Steidl, Colin Erickson, Kevin Engebretson and Whiting all added two hits apiece.

The late comeback by Brandon-Evansville kept Chris Koep from recording a win after a solid start. Koep went eight strong innings, striking out 11 along the way.

The Tigers will host back-to-back games this weekend. They welcome in Clarissa on Saturday before the Alexandria Senators come to Bernie Steidl Field on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
