Section 6A-South softball: Ashby claims titleHaley Ness allows just nine hits in two games during championship run
The Ashby softball team made history last Thursday by winning its first 6A South title with back-to-back wins in Pillager.
The Arrows got big pitching performances from Haley Ness in both games. She struck out 13 batters in the championship as Ashby held on for a 3-2 win over Pillager. That came after Ness blanked Eagle Valley in a 3-0 victory in the semifinals.
“Today was a great day to be an Arrow,” head coach Joey Andreasen said. “This is the farthest we have advanced into section play in the history of Arrow softball. I am proud of how they play, how hard they work and how apparent it is that they love the game of softball.”
Ness allowed just four hits against Pillager in the title game. Her offense gave her enough runs to work with behind nine hits. Jeannette Evavold went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Meg Roley added two hits, as well.
The Arrows took an early lead against Eagle Valley and held on late in the semis. They put up one in the first and added two insurance runs in the fourth. Roley had two more hits, to go along with two RBIs. Ness helped herself out with two hits and two runs scored, while Hayley Barry went 2-for-3 and added the other RBI.
Ashby was scheduled to take on the No. 1 seed from the north in Hawley last night, Tuesday. The winner of that game advances to the section title game on June 2 in Menahga. The loser would take on the winner of the subsection runner-up contest between Menahga and Pillager for a chance to play in that title game.
