Card boys' tennis: Team season ends with loss to MoorheadAlexandria will now begin individual play
The Alexandria tennis team saw the team portion of its season come to an end on Tuesday in the first round of the north subsection tournament.
The Cardinals got one win out of its doubles lineup as Moorhead proved to be too much the rest of the way in a 6-1 win for the Spuds. Ryan Johnson and Will Harding got that win for Alexandria in a 6-0, 7-5 match at third doubles. Moorhead took care of every other match in straight sets.
“We knew going in that Moorhead would be tough,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “When we defeated them earlier in the season they were without two of their best players. Our guys were excited to play, and I do believe they did their best, but the Spuds were just the better team yesterday.”
Moorhead was dominant in the singles lineup. Alexandria’s Ben LeVahn earned the No. 2 overall seed in the section’s singles tournament, but Tyler Hjalmquist was up for the challenge of facing him on Monday. The top Moorhead singles player controlled the match, winning 6-0, 6-2.
“All of their singles players were in top form,” Ronning said. “And our guys had a hard time winning points at any of the spots.”
The Cardinals wrapped up their season with five wins on the year.
“We have improved as a whole as the year went along,” Ronning said. “And we have good things to build on for next year.”
