The Alexandria tennis team wrapped up its regular season at home with a 7-0 loss to a tough Fergus Falls team on senior night.
The Cardinals’ lone senior, Ben LeVahn, came close to finishing his home career with a win before coming up just short against Jake Anderson. LeVahn won the second set 6-3 before falling 2-6 in the third.
Sam Rice also forced a third set at second singles. Rice won 6-4 in the first and almost took the match in two before falling in a tiebreaker 6-7 (3). The Otters’ Ben Ronning took control in the third, winning 6-2.
“Ben played his last match in Alexandria, as did Sam, who is moving to Iowa this summer,” Cardinals’ head coach Dave Ronning said. “Both have been a vital part of our team and program, and they will be dearly missed. Ben has been a varsity player for the better part of four seasons in Alexandria, and we wish him the best in college.”
Austin Storm and Trevor Grandgenett followed Rice and LeVahn’s lead by coming close but falling just short at first doubles. Jesse Schneeberger and David Schneck found a way to win many key points in a 7-5, 6-3 win over the Alexandria duo. Mack Wadi and Ben VonBargen also battled their opponent in a close match but came up short at second doubles, 6-3, 6-4.
“We felt we gave the Otters all they could handle at four spots,” Ronning said. “And it looked as though we could win the match with those spots, but it turned out to be an 0-7 score, and as tennis goes, the score did not indicate just how close it was.”
