Soil and water stewardship celebrated

The Douglas Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) board of supervisors and staff remind the public that everyone has a responsibility to be a good steward of resources.

The Douglas Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) board of supervisors and staff remind the public that everyone has a responsibility to be a good steward of resources. 2011 marks the 56th year of celebrating Soil and Water Stewardship Week, held this year between April 24 and May 1.

This year’s theme is “Forests for People – More Than You Can Imagine.” Trees provide us with shade, wood products, fuel, as well as help clean the air we breathe.

Each year the Douglas SWCD plants trees for landowners such as farmstead shelterbelts, field windbreaks, streambank and shoreland protection, wildlife habitat and critical area plantings. Also, many people order trees and shrubs to help beautify their yards.

Understanding the importance of forests in our daily lives is the key connection of the 2011 Stewardship theme. Forests play a critical role in providing clean water, healthy wildlife habitat, as well as jobs for our citizens and products that we use every day.

For information about Stewardship Week or to order trees for your yard or farmstead, call the Douglas SWCD at (320) 763-3191, extension 3.
