The Alexandria girls’ Nordic ski team showed off some of its young talent at the Section 8 meet last Wednesday as Julia Sieling and Melissa Gromatka punched their tickets to state with their performances at Camp Ripley.

Sieling, as just a freshman, paved the way for an Alexandria team that finished sixth out of the 10-team field. She had a pursuit time of 40:34 to finish ninth overall and fourth among skiers who were not a part of the Little Falls state qualifying team. The top eight individual finishers who do not qualify with a team earn a trip to state.

The final individual to earn that spot was Gromatka. The sophomore finished 13th in her overall pursuit time at 42:12. She finished in 22:33 in the classic and 19:39 in the freestyle. Sieling crossed the finish line in 21:37 in the classic and 18:57 in the freestyle.

These two will battle the best high school skiers in the state at Giants Ridge in Biwabik tomorrow, Thursday.

Leah Stinson and Megan Bristow rounded out the top four finishers for the Cardinal girls. Stinson finished 31st overall with a classic time of 24:23 and a free time of 21:47. Bristow was 39th.

The Alexandria boys also finished sixth as a team. The Cardinals were unable to send anyone to state as Todd Johnson was the fastest finisher, coming in 17th. He had a pursuit time of 36:01, finishing the classic in 19:03 and the freestyle in 16:58. Jimmy Lovrien (23rd, 36:51), Cody Call (26th, 37:25) and Tyler Johnson (28th, 37:41) rounded out the top four finishers for Alexandria.

The Little Falls boys made it a clean sweep for the Flyers boys and girls. They edged Bemidji by 11 points to take the team title with 370 points.
