On Tuesday, February 8, Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) will be having their annual lobby day at the State Capitol.
“Minnesota Farmers Union is a grassroots organization that emphasizes cooperation and legislative policy,” said Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union President. “Educating senators and representatives about what the Farmers Union and farmers are concerned about is a priority of ours in these crucial times.”
Some of the issues the Farmers Union members will be discussing with their representatives and senators are:
--Limiting cuts to important state agriculture initiatives and not “zeroing out” essential programs that protect ethanol producers and rural jobs.
--Enhancing dairy programs for profit and preventing cuts to organic and sustainable grants.
--Holding the line on property taxes.
--Support for education that includes funding for 4H and Extension.
--Expanding initiatives that support Minnesota-grown, and locally-grown food.
Farmers Union members will also be meeting with Governor Mark Dayton and Attorney General Lori Swanson during their lobby day. If you would like to speak with a Farmers Union member during lobby day, contact Katie Fitzsimmons, director of communications at (612) 616-5252.
