Authorities believe a heavy accumulation of snow caused a roof to collapse on a hardware store in Glenwood Tuesday.

At about 4 p.m., Pope County dispatch received a 911 call about the roof collapse at Wagner Hardware, located west of the stoplights in downtown Glenwood on the north side of Minnesota Avenue.

Five employees were reportedly inside the building at the time and were able to escape unharmed, according to the Glenwood Police Department.

There were no customers in the building when the collapse happened.

The extent of the structural damage is not known yet but in a news release the police department described it as “quite extensive.”

It is not believed that any of the surrounding buildings sustained any damage.

Law enforcement continues to secure the area until insurance companies can evaluate and determine the condition of the structure.

Those responding to the call included the Glenwood Police Department; Pope County Sheriff’s Office; Starbuck Police Department; fire departments from Glenwood, Starbuck and Villard; Minnesota Department of Transportation and Glacial Ridge Ambulance.
