Girls' basketball: Turnovers prove costly as Chargers fall to Knghts

Brandon-Evansville drops to 7-10 overall

A few too many turnovers and some missed opportunities at the line proved to be the difference in a loss for the Brandon-Evansville girls against West Central Area on Tuesday night.

The Chargers gave the ball away 23 times and made just 7-of-13 shots from the line. That allowed the Knights to erase a four-point deficit at the break and hold on for a 53-49 win.

“We missed three one-and-ones, and I believe they converted five steals into layups,” Brandon-Evansville head coach Dick Simpson said. “Despite all that, we were a couple free throws away from winning a game. We played hard, I don’t have any fault with that.”

The turnovers spoiled what was a solid shooting night for the Chargers. They hit 21-of-35 shots from the field, while the Knights went 24-of-54 from the floor. Jen Froemming and Alyssa Blair led the way for West Central with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Tee Rudnitski finished with 11.

Heather Strese poured in 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Chargers. Megan Friedrich added 10 points and six boards, while Heather Dickey finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.

The loss dropped the Chargers to 7-10 overall. It was the fifth straight win for the Knights as they moved to 7-9 on the season.
