Area boys' basketball results

Ashby 55, Brandon-Evansville 53

Battle Lake 38, Brandon-Evansville 34

The Ashby boys’ basketball team extended Brandon-Evansville’s losing streak to four games last Friday night with a buzzer beater that sent the Arrows to a 55-53 win.

Ashby’s Jon Quernemoen drove the lane in the final seconds before finding Blake Ohren for an open look. Ohren stepped up and drained the shot as the buzzer sounded, sending Ashby to its third straight win.

“It was definitely an exciting win for our team and fans,” head coach Jeremy Knick said. “I am very proud of these guys. They continue to impress me with their great attitudes and hard work.”

The Chargers looked like they would run away with things early on. They led 30-18 in the first half before they went cold from the field. Ashby went on a 24-1 run from that point to extend its lead to 42-31 early in the second half.

The Chargers chipped away from a nine-point Ashby lead late in the game. They then had a chance to win it in a 53-53 game before a turnover gave the ball back to the Arrows with a little more than 15 seconds left. Ohren got the steal on that play before sending his team to its eighth win of the season.

Riley Mickelson led the Arrows with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Tanner Langlie added 12 points, seven rebounds, five steals and five assists. J.P. Moe poured in 11 points. Phillip Krueger had a game-high 24 points for Brandon-Evansville. Jared Goehringer added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Brandt Bitzan chipped in 10 points.

“We experienced another long span of time where we were ineffective at the offensive end,” Chargers’ head coach John Holsten said. “We must concentrate a little better, take care of the ball a little better and be patient in finding our best possible shot each possession.”

Those offensive struggles carried over from a 38-34 loss to undefeated Battle Lake just three days earlier.

The Chargers scored just one point in the final 10 minutes as they watched a four-point lead at the break disappear. They went 0-for-11 from the field during that stretch and committed two turnovers. Goehringer got his team’s only point from the free throw line.

Battle Lake was never able to pull away, in spite of that lapse. The Battlers struggled themselves, scoring just three points in the final eight minutes. All of those came from the line in the last 20 seconds as they secured the four-point win.

It was a victory that kept Battle Lake at the top of the LEC standings. The Battlers are 13-0 and 6-0 in league play. The two losses dropped the Chargers to 4-3 in the LEC and 8-6 overall.

“The losses effectively eliminate us from a conference title,” Holsten said. “Our goal must be a commitment to daily improvement and to be the best possible team we can be when the playoffs arrive.”

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 65, Osakis 33

Battle Lake 53, Osakis 41

The Osakis boys ran into a couple of teams that seem capable of making deep runs into their section tournaments as the Silverstreaks saw their losing streak hit eight games last week.

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle welcomed Osakis in on Saturday and sent them home with a 65-33 loss. That came two days after an undefeated Battle Lake team used a strong second half to pull away for a 63-41 victory.

The Silverstreaks could not keep up with LPGE from the get-go on Saturday. The defense of the Thunder held them to just 13 points in the first half as Joe Roggenbuck, Collin Dague and Mitch Herzog were the only three players to score for Osakis before the break. That allowed LPGE to jump out to a 19-point lead at the half.

Long Prairie continued to open things up in the second half. Cody Warner hit three threes to add to his game-high 17 points. The Thunder had nine players score in all. That was plenty as they held Osakis to 10-of-40 shooting from the field. The biggest difference came from behind the three-point line, where the Thunder hit 10-of-24 shots.

The Silverstreaks got a team-high 11 points from Joe Roggenbuck. Kyle Swenstad added seven, while Dague and Herzog finished with six each.

“I did see some positive things come out of this game as younger players are getting opportunities,” head coach Chris Stroup said. “Jordan Mack got some quality minutes at point guard for us and did some good things. Mitch Herzog is moving away from really being a scoring threat and more into a passing threat, handing out three assists. We just need to keep forging forward and improving each day at practice and learning from each game.”

Osakis stuck with a 13-0 Battle Lake team through one half on Thursday night. Devin Waldvogel hit two threes in the opening half, while Dague and Roggenbuck added eight and six points, respectively. That helped Osakis head into the half down by just nine.

It also sent a wakeup call to the Battlers. They responded with an 11-0 run in the first two minutes, 28 seconds after the break. They went on to score 19 of the first 20 points in the second half to pull away.

Juniors Alex Ukkelberg and Zach Wilkie were the catalysts for Battle Lake. They combined for 24 of their team’s 31 points after the break. Ukkelberg had a game-high 24.

Osakis countered with two players in double figures. Roggenbuck had 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Dague added 11, while Mitch Herzog had nine, all coming in the second half.

The Silverstreaks were trying to get back in the win column last night Tuesday, when they were on the road at Swanville. They will be back home on Friday night when they welcome Eagle Valley to town.
