Card boys' hockey: Bemidji topples Redbird boys 7-2Lumberjacks have just two losses
The Bemidji boys’ hockey team played like the two-loss team it is on Saturday night at the Runestone Community Center as the Lumberjacks handed Alexandria its third straight loss in a 7-2 game.
Bemidji controlled the pace of the game from the get-go, outshooting the Cardinals 16-4 in the first period. The Lumberjacks went on to outshoot Alexandria 39-19 for the game.
That pressure led to a 3-1 lead after the first. Jack Wensman tied things at one apiece for Alexandria with a goal off an assist from Jacob Smith just 24 seconds after Bemidji had taken its first lead. The Lumberjacks answered right back, getting a goal from Matt Serratore less than a minute later. Will Bruestle added to that near the 14-minute mark to give his team a little breathing room.
Bryce Miller got Alexandria’s second goal to start the third period. He made it a 5-2 game off assists from Jack Wensman and Tom Schmidt. Bemidji continued to apply the pressure, though, as the Lumberjacks added two power play goals to finish off the Cardinals down the stretch.
“Bemidji has a very good team, and it showed,” Alexandria head coach Scott Woods said. “We struggled to keep up with them all night. They are fast and physical and will have a great chance to come out of Section 8AA and advance to the state tournament.”
The Lumberjacks moved to 17-2-1 after the win, while Alexandria dropped to 6-11-1. The Cardinals are on the road for two this week before coming home for a game against Sartell-St. Stephen next Tuesday.
