Card wrestling: Veterans lead Alexandria to win on senior nightThe Cards used wins from four seniors to secure a 40-34 victory over St. Cloud Tech
It was a good win for the Cardinal wrestling team Thursday night as they edged out St. Cloud Tech 40-34 to move to 2-6 in Central Lakes Conference action.
“Ross [Carlson] is out for the season with a knee injury, but the other four seniors didn’t let the team down last night as they all won their varsity matches,” said head coach Tom Ellison. “Brian [Eipperle] picked up a pin at 145 pounds to put the team up by eight points.
“After a loss at 152 pounds, Cole [Ellison] stretched the lead out again with a major decision win.
“Tech kept it close again with a pin at 171 pounds to even the score at 28 apiece,” said the head coach. “Knowing that Tech had a very experienced heavyweight, it was up to Andy [Bouressa] and Dillon [Schauff] to push the team points out of reach before the heavyweight match.
“Both came through with ease as they tired their opponents out and picked up third period pins to seal the deal.”
Trent Piepenburg also had a pin at 103 pounds to give Alexandria an early lead before the Tigers jumped ahead 12-6 on three straight wins.
Josh Fearing earned a forfeit win to tie the match and Tony Hubbard had a quick one minute pin to give Alexandria a six-point lead and the Cardinals never trailed from that point on.
“It was senior night as we honored the contributions of our senior wrestlers to our program,” said Ellison. “Andy, Ross, Brian, Cole, Dillon and Jeremy Stoltz were asked to stand in front of the home crowd and get some well-deserved recognition.
“Jeremy joined us this year and has been a welcome addition to our practice room.
“Our five longstanding team members will have contributed more than 800 matches to our wrestling program by the time they finish their high school careers.”
