The Minnesota State Patrol is giving motorists a pep talk to encourage Super Bowl revelers to plan for a safe ride and avoid driving impaired.

During Minnesota Super Bowl weekends 2007–2009, there were 1,804 motor vehicle crashes, resulting in five deaths and 28 severe injuries. Three of the five deaths occurred on Super Sunday – two of which were alcohol-related. Only one of the five motorists killed was belted. During this same time period, 1,405 motorists were arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI).

Extra DWI patrols will be on the road today, Super Bowl Sunday.
