It's 'Daffodil Days' in Douglas County

A new season of hope has arrived in Douglas County, thanks to the American Cancer Society (ACS) Daffodil Days.

Daffodil Days is one of the American Cancer Society’s oldest and most beloved fundraising programs that celebrates the society’s mission to eliminate cancer as a life-threatening disease. Although it involves offering daffodils to donors in appreciation for their contributions, it is about more than giving flowers – it’s an opportunity to share hope for a world free of cancer.

To order daffodils, call KXRA-Radio at (320) 763-3131 and leave your name, the number of bunches or other items you wish to order and your phone number. The daffodils will be available for pick-up at KXRA-Radio in Alexandria on March 8 to 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be extra daffodils for sale at KXRA for anyone wanting to purchase at that time.

Volunteer coordinators visit Douglas County businesses and take requests for flowers from January 28 to February 11. The volunteers begin delivering the flowers to the businesses on March 7.

Following are the items being sold:

• A bunch of daffodils, $10;

• A bunch and a vase, $15;

• Bear and a bunch, a limited edition Boyds Bear created especially for Daffodil Days, $25;

• Sunshine bouquet, six bouquets and fresh greenery arranged in a glass vase, $75;

• Dainty daffodils, replantable miniature daffodil bulbs in a container, $15;

• Bear hugs, anonymous donation of a limited edition Boyds Bear to a child fighting cancer, $25.

• Gift of Hope bouquets are bouquets of 10 daffodils in a vase that are delivered to cancer patients in hospitals and treatment centers in the community. They are delivered anonymously. Cost is $25.

Money raised through Daffodil Days enable the ACS to offer free programs and services that help people fight cancer including the following:

• Transportation assistance to and from treatments;

• Lodging for those having to travel long distances for treatment;

• Online educational classes for people with cancer and their loved ones;

• Free and confidential assistance in helping locate cancer clinical trials based on needs;

• Physical, emotional and financial assistance to ease the cancer experience.

Additionally, Daffodil Days contributions provide the ACS with money to fund groundbreaking cancer research, educate people about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection and advocate for meaningful public health policies.
