High water usage to fight SunOpta fire may cause temporary water discoloration for ALP customers

Due to the fire at SunOpta in Alexandria, Alexandria Light and Power (ALP) has experienced a large amount of water run through its system today (Friday).

Because of these large flows, certain water mains in the city are being scoured and discolored water is showing up in customers’ taps.

In addition, to keep the water towers charged for fire fighting needs, some of the water introduced to the system was not sent through iron removal filters. However, all water has been disinfected with chlorine before being introduced into the water mains.

There is no health risk associated with this water.

If you experience rusty water, ALP officials suggest that running the cold water faucet until it turns clear.

If you have additional questions, call ALP at (320) 763-6501.
