Roger was born January 9, 1954 in Alexandria to Percy and Wanda (Franklin) Ensign. He was raised in Alexandria and graduated from Jefferson High School. Following high school, Roger attended vocational college in Staples, where he studied to become a chef.
Roger returned to Alexandria where he worked at the Reno Club. He worked for a number of other restaurants. Roger also worked as a security guard at Steinbring Motor Company and drove taxi in Alexandria. Following his mother’ s death in 1987, Roger moved to the Twin Cities. He lived at his aunt Dorothy Franklin’s home for several years. While in the Twin Cities, Roger worked making plastic cards for a company that provided mailing advertisements and offers.
Roger served as a volunteer for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Posse for several years. He enjoyed watching and collecting movies and Nascar racing. Roger had many friends. Spending time with and visiting with his friends were important to him. He loved going out to eat with friends.
Throughout Roger’s adult life he dealt with health issues and diabetes. In 2002, Roger was disabled by diabetes and he returned to Alexandria. Roger’s health continued to decline due to multiple complications of the diabetes.
His parents and a nephew, Jeffrey Nolan, preceded Roger in death.
Roger is survived by his brother, Gerry Ensign of Litchfield; sisters, Sue Nolan (Dell Krebs) of Miltona and Arlene Bergemann and husband, Al, of LaLuz, NM; four nephews; two nieces; several great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, January 18 at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. The Rev. Adrian Ledermann officiated. Rick Gawthrop was the soloist. Interment at Kinkead Cemetery will be at a later date. Honorary pallbearers included Dan Nolan, Josh Ensign, Zach Ensign and all of Roger’s friends.
