Cardinal gymnasts score a season best to take first at Maple Lake

Alexandria junior Sarah Dolan helped the Cardinal gymnastics team take first at the Maple Lake Invite with an 8.9 on the vault, a 7.1 on the beam and an 8.45 on her floor routine.

The Cardinal gymnastics team is showing improvement every meet and was rewarded for that with its best score of the season and a win at the Maple Lake Invite on Saturday.

Alexandria was coming off a second-place finish at its own quad from the day before. The Cardinals carried that momentum into Maple Lake, where they held off second-place finisher, Paynesville, by accumulating a team score of 134.725. Paynesville was 11 points behind at 123.8, while Maple Lake rounded out the top three at 123.6.

Briquelle Bowden led the way with four top scores for Alexandria. She paced the Cardinals in the all-around (35.8), vault (9.2), bars (8.8) and floor routine (9.45. Tahlia Bowden led Alexandria scorers on the beam with an 8.9.

The Cardinals almost picked up another win at their home quadrangular the night before. Alexandria fell by less than four points after scoring 132.65. New London-Spicer edged them with a team score of 138.45, while Bemidji (131.4) and Frazee (97.85) were third and fourth, respectively.

Briquelle Bowden once again led Alexandria with a third-place finish in the all around. Tahlia Bowden was fifth, while Sarah Sater provided the depth with a seventh-place finish.
