Car crashes into Magpie building

A bit of excitement took place at the Magpie gift store in Alexandria Saturday afternoon.

A bit of excitement took place at the Magpie gift store in Alexandria Saturday afternoon.

A driver in a car traveling north on Broadway tried to stop for the light at the intersection with 6th Avenue as it turned yellow and went sliding out of control on the ice-crusted road.

The car jumped the curb and struck the Magpie building.

Joe Nemo, the husband of the store’s owner, was in Magpie when it happened.

“The loud bang got our attention real quick,” he said. “Fortunately, no one was injured.”

The building didn’t sustain any damage and no glass was broken.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, complained of shoulder and neck pain but declined taking an ambulance.

The roads are still slick out there. Over the weekend, local law enforcement responded to the scenes of dozens of fender-bender crashes and vehicles that left the roadway.
