Nordic skiing: Cards compete at Mesabi invitational
Frigid temperatures delayed things for about two hours before the Alexandria Nordic ski teams and the rest of a loaded field were able to get started at the annual Mesabi East Invite at Giants Ridge this past Saturday.
Frigid temperatures delayed things for about two hours before the Alexandria Nordic ski teams and the rest of a loaded field were able to get started at the annual Mesabi East Invite at Giants Ridge this past Saturday.
More than 1,100 high school skiers took part in the event. The Cardinals’ best finish came from Melissa Gromatka. She finished 67th overall in the varsity skate competition with a time of 22:22 on the 5K course. Leah Stinson (25:44) was 148th in the skate.
Julia Sieling and Katie Lovrien raced in the classic competition for Alexandria. Sieling was 99th overall with a time of 24:04, while Lovrien finished 170th at 29:42.
Jimmy Lovrien paced the way for the Alexandria boys. He finished 91st in the classic race with a time of 19:20. Todd Johnson was 135th after crossing the finish line in 20:51.
Tyler Johnson led Alexandria in the skate race. He finished 102nd overall with a time of 18:43, while Cody Call crossed in 19:37, good for 126th.
