Card Nordic skiing: Redbirds ski to fifth, sixth at Brainerd
The Cardinals were led individually by Todd Johnson and Julia Sieling
There was rain, there was sleet and there was snow – a little bit of everything for a December Nordic ski meet last Thursday at the Northland Arboretum in Brainerd, where the Alexandria boys’ team finished fifth and the girls were sixth.
Todd Johnson led all Cardinal boys with an 11th place finish, while Julia Sieling’s 16th place paced the girls’ team.
Jimmy Lovrien was 15th, Tyler Johnson 18th and Cody Call 19th.
The rest of the Alexandria girls’ finishers were Melissa Gromatka in 20th, Katie Lovrien in 33rd and Lauren Hagstrom in 34th.
The meet, scheduled to host 13 teams, was down to just six due to the pending winter storm. Two hours of rain preceded the snow, turning the course into a slushy mess.
The event included 3.3 kilometers of classical skiing, followed by 3.3 kilometers of skating without a break.
The boys’ event was won by Ricky Devine of Little Falls, with Bailey Drewes of Bemidji winning the girls’ race.
