Lloyd was born December 9, 1911 in Urness Township of Douglas County to Nellie (Walstad) and Olaf Hokanson.
He attended Douglas County District 49 School in Urness Township through the 8th grade and later attended the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris. When his father passed away, he took over farming the Hokanson home place with his mother Nellie. The now noted “Century Farm” was homesteaded by his grandparents, Jens and Nellie Hokanson.
In 1943 he met and married Mayme Aho, also from Urness Township. They had four children, Helen (George) Kent of Fergus Falls, Harlan (Snoose) of Evansville (living on the Hokanson home place), Romel of San Diego CA, and Renee Schecker of Evansville.
He and Mayme farrmed the Hokanson home place until 1968 when they moved into Evansville and his son took over the home farm. In 2008 they moved to the Evansville Senior Living Apartments. He farmed the Hokanson home place for 50 years.
Most important to Lloyd were his family and his Lutheran faith. He also really enjoyed deer hunting and fishing.
In 1958 he started police training, which led to a 40-year career in law enforcement; including Urness Township constable, Stillwater Prison gower guard, first security guard at 3M Plant, patrolman for Alexandria and Elbow Lake police departments, Evansville Police chief, Alexandria court room bailiff, Douglas County jailor and dispatcher.
Through the years, he has been a member and/or officer of the following: St. Petri Lutheran Church; Fryksande Lutheran Church and Cemetery Association; Urness Township; Evansville Rifle and Pistol Club; Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, charter member of the Sheriff’s Posse, First Responders, Soil and Water Conservation, Fair Board, and many others. He was elected to the Douglas County Older American Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife. Mayme; children, Helen, Harlan, Romel, Renee; grandchildren, Mary (Larry) Thorstad, Michelle (Ryan) Gebhardt, Michael Hokanson, Kristi Hokanson and Cory Hokanson; great-grand-children, Tyson, Larissa, Nicholas, Vincent, Ella and several others; and brother, Walter (Slim) Hokanson of Morris.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Josephine Swart, 2008; and infant Gladys.
Lloyd’s motto was: “Always treat other people like you would like to be treated.” He will be thoroughly missed by his family and his community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to St. Petri Lutheran Church or Fryksande Lutheran Cemetery.
A funeral service was held December 28 at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Urness Township with the Rev. David Gran officiating.
Burial was at Fryksande Lutheran Cemetery.
