Alexandria’s Jamie Piepenburg finished 36th out of almost 200 of the best high school runners in the country at the Nike Cross Nationals last Saturday in Portland, Oregon.
The second-ranked runner in Minnesota finished the 5K course in 19 minutes, 50.5 seconds. She averaged six minute, 23.2 second miles. Piepenburg wanted to finish better than she did the first time she qualified for this event in 2008. She did just that, moving from 87th two years ago to 36th this time around.
Rachel Johnson out of the South region finished first in the girls 5K championship with a time of 18 minutes, 18.6 seconds. The strong finish for Piepenburg should offer plenty of motivation going into the off-season as she prepares for a state title run in what will be her senior season in Alexandria.
