100 YEARS AGO
November passed with only a fraction of an inch of snow and so far, not much has shown up this month… North American Storage Company is paying 16 cents a pound for dressed turkeys; 13 cents a pound if over 9 pounds; 12 cents a pound for dressed ducks; spring chicken hens, 7 cents a pound; and 6 cents a pound for old roosters… Construction for a new hospital in Glenwood will begin in the spring at an estimated cost of $16,000… For sale by S.B. Hardy is a five-room house with two bedrooms for $10 down and $10 a month.
50 YEARS AGO
It is expected that 25,000 Minnesota Vikings season tickets, priced at $40 each, will be sold before they commence play next fall… Four members of the Cardinals have been chosen to the Resort Region Conference: Steve Clarke, Bill Donley, Steve Alto and Gary Nelson… The action of the U.S. Supreme Court last week cleared the way for Minnesota Valley Gas Company to proceed with plans to bring natural gas to Alexandria… A scale model milk drier was in operation during the open house of the Land O’ Lakes processing plant open house this week… Mrs. Maynard Wedum has been elected national director of the Girl Scouts of America… After a 52-degree day, the first big storm of the season brought freezing drizzle, heavy snow and high winds, wreaking havoc with power lines and service.

Garfield teacher Jan Nelson created a cartoon character named LeRoy Klutz, to guide his 5th graders through the metric system. He recently received the General Educator of the Year award by the Minnesota Association of Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities… The Douglas County Courthouse is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places… Bobbi Van Amber won the Minnesota cross country championship… Mark Storhaug’s girls’ swim team captured the sixth straight Section Eight championship. He recently was named Section Coach of the Year by his peers… Under the artistry of Ellis Liesmeier, a stump of a dead elm on Hawthorne Street was turned into a bear overnight. It is located at the home of his son, Loren… Make your reservation with Utopia Tours for West Side Story at Chanhassen Dinner Theater. $29.50 includes dinner, play and transportation.

From 1998 to 1999, more people moved into Douglas County than moved out. With 986 new residents, it ranks 15th in the state in growth… This year’s Runestone Museum Christmas ornament, sponsored by Steinbring Chevrolet, is a porcelain snowflake with a hand-painted picture of Big Ole… In recognition of Donald Chan and Joanne Vogt’s commitment to the community and their outstanding service, 3M Foundation is donating $400 to Zion School as part of the 3-M Gives program… The Department of Natural Resources reminds fishermen that the perch limit has changed from 100 to a daily catch of 20 and 50 in possession… Northwood League, a summer baseball program featuring Division I college players from around the country, plans to form a team in Alexandria next summer. It requested a license to sell 3.2 beer.
