Local group seeks to wipe out poverty

What does it take to wipe out poverty in Minnesota?

A major step, says the group, A Minnesota Without Poverty, is to bring key players to the table – nonprofits, government officials, businesses, faith communities and concerned citizens throughout the state – to develop action plans.

On December 9, A Minnesota Without Poverty is doing just that by holding simultaneous gatherings in five sites throughout the state.

Locally, the public is invited to attend at West Central Initiative (WCI), 1000 Western Avenue, Fergus Falls. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Entitled “Enough for All,” the gathering will include a web presentation that all the sites will participate in, followed by individual planning sessions.

Representative Morrie Lanning, Moorhead, who is on the Minnesota Legislature’s Ladder Out of Poverty Task Force, will be on hand to discuss the task force’s findings and subsequent bill.

To register for the WCI gathering or for more information, go to www.wcif.org/event/enoughforall or www.mnwithoutpoverty.org.

A Minnesota Without Poverty is a statewide movement to end poverty in Minnesota by 2020. It seeks to engage all sectors of society – faith communities, government, business, people experiencing poverty, education, communities of color, nonprofits and foundations.

Local sponsors of the Enough for All event include Lakes and Prairies Community Action, Inc., Otter Tail-Wadena Community Action, Inc., Northern Connections, Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program, West Central Minnesota Community Action, Inc., and West Central Initiative.

West Central Initiative is a regional community foundation serving Becker, Clay, Grant, Douglas, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin counties in west central Minnesota.
