Section 6A swimming: Erickson heads back to stateThe Alexandria senior qualified in the 50 and 100 free; Minnewaska/Morris sophomore Bridget Opdahl qualified in the 50 free.
Alexandria’s Rosey Erickson and Minnewaska/Morris’s Bridget Opdahl will have their fall seasons extended for one more week.
The two swimmers both advanced to the State Class A swimming and diving meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday after qualifying at the Section 6A meet at Discovery Middle School Saturday.
The Cardinal senior earned a repeat trip in the 50 free as she finished second with a tie of 24.65, then grabbed third in the 100 free to earn a trip by bettering the state qualifying time of 55.32.
The Gator sophomore also qualified by time in the 50 free, swimming a 25.13 to finish third. State qualifying is 25.31.
The top four individuals in diving and the top two relays and individuals in each swimming event, along with any who qualify by time, advance to the state level.
The Cardinals finished eighth as a team, with the Gators ninth. Sartell-St. Stephen captured the Section 6A team title.
Five pool and one section record were set during the Section meet as Sartell’s Marisa Wood set a new mark in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.00, Sabre Ellen Bloom set a new record in the 100 backstroke in 59.73, and Little Falls’ Whitney Weisz set new pool records in the 50 and 100 freestyle races with times of 24.43 and 52.49. Weisz’s time in the 100 was also a new section record.
Sartell-St. Stephen finished up the record-setting with a new pool mark in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:43.82.
Alexandria splashers qualified 15 times during the preliminaries to reach the finals on Saturday.
“Alexandria made the grade in all three relays,” said head coach Mark Storhaug. “The 200 medley relay team of Kalli Bowser, Sarah Sater, Erickson and Beth Burnham took 7th; Rachel Peterson, Megan Bristow, Sater and Erickson combined for a fifth in the 200 free relay; and the team of Peterson, Madalyn Winger, Caroline Roers and Ellen Johnson were a consolation ninth place finisher in the 400 free relay.”
Individually, Peterson finaled in the 200 and 100 freestyles, finishing 16th in both races.
Winger was 11th in the 200 IM and 13th in the 500 free, Sater finished in eighth place on the boards, earning a medal in diving. She was also 10th in the 100 breaststroke.
Zoe Weltzin finished 16th in diving and Roers took 14th in the 100 back. Erickson and Bristow led the Cards, medaling twice with two individual top-8 swims each.
Bristow took eighth in both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
The swimming preliminaries will begin at noon on Friday. The top 16 will advance to Saturday’s finals, which also get under way at noon.

Rosey Erickson’s second-place 50 free time was good enough to give her the third best time in the fourth and biggest heat for the prelims of the State Class A meet this weekend.
She swam a 24.65, with the best time coming in belonging to Amanda Paulson of Monticello at 23.76. Paulson is the Class A record-holder with a 23.37 and the defending champion in that event.
Only six other swimmers in the entire 25-swimmer field have better times than the Cardinal swimmer.
Minnewaska/Morris’s Bridget Opdahl is in the second heat, coming in with a qualifying time of 25.13.
Erickson will also be in the 100 free, qualifying with a third place and state-qualifying time of 55.25. She is in the same heat as Whitney Weisz of Little Falls, the Section 6A champ, who swam a 52.49. The Class A state record is 51.17. Defending state champion Heidi Busack of Fergus Falls is also back in the event and will swim in the first heat. She qualified with a 52.74.
AWARDING THE BEST
The Section 6A coaches voted Nathan Meyer of Melrose as the 6A head coach of the year, while his assistant, Sandy Rasmussen, was selected as the 6A assistant coach of the year. Nichole Thull of Sartell-St. Stephen was named the 6A diving coach of the year.
Marisa Wood of Sartell-St. Stephen was named the swimmer of the meet, while Emily McIntire of Sartell was the diver of the meet.
St. Cloud Apollo received the Section 6A academic team champion award.
