JHS math team kicks off season

The Jefferson High School (JHS) Math League team had its first meet on Monday, November 1, competing against Breckenridge, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls and Moorhead.

The Jefferson High School (JHS) Math League team had its first meet on Monday, November 1, competing against Breckenridge, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls and Moorhead. The team finished in second place with 38 points. JHS’ top scorer for the meet was Taylor Score with 12 points.

Team scores are calculated by combining the scores of eight preselected individuals on individual exams and points earned during a team exam. During the individual rounds, students have 12 minutes to complete four math problems.

Individuals earn points as follows: The first problem is worth one point and the other three are worth two points. Each student takes two exams. The maximum an individual can earn at one event is 14 points.

The problems cover different topics in algebra, geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry and pre-calculus.

Students who participated in the meet were Jordan Arel, Kalli Bowser, Jen DeCock, Claire Donovan, Anna Erickson, Trevor Gibbons, Saige Glaser, Katie Lovrien, Jade Mathre, Natalie Molloy, Kelli Montbriand, Nicholas Schlapkohl, Taylor Score, Katy Simonson, Leah Stinson, Carson Stowe, John Turner and Danielle Vanderhyde.
