Imaginations kicked into high gear for Halloween fun in the Alexandria area over the weekend.

Several events took place – some on the scary side, like the Alexandria Area Arts Association’s haunted theater – and some less spooky but enjoyable activities for smaller children, such as the Community Halloween Party at the National Guard Armory in Alexandria.

That party was sponsored by Eagles 3063 Aerie and Auxiliary with assistance from the VFW, Elks and auxiliaries.

Early Childhood Family Education and School Readiness also threw a Halloween party at Woodland Elementary School for families with preschool children.

The Downtown Merchants Association offered trick-or-treating for children on Saturday afternoon. The Viking Plaza Mall also got into the spirit by offering trick-or-treating fun on Sunday.

First Lutheran Church offered trunk-or-treating to approximately 1,500 kids on Sunday. Among the most popular costumes, according to observers: Dorothy, scarecrows, fairies, princesses, hippies, Buzz Lightyear, Mario Brothers, cowboy/girl, Minnie Mouse, ladybugs, lions and skunks.

Some of the more creative costumes at the event were a movie theater floor, a vending machine and a Crayola crayon box.
