Blood donors needed this holiday season

Every day, patients across the nation rely on blood donated through the American Red Cross. Nearly 5 million people need transfusions each year.

Every day, patients across the nation rely on blood donated through the American Red Cross. Nearly 5 million people need transfusions each year.

The blood supply is particularly vulnerable throughout the holiday season because donors are traveling, or visiting family and friends, and may forget to schedule a blood donation appointment. Since red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days, it is vital for eligible individuals to give blood regularly.

The next available opportunity to give blood in Douglas County is Tuesday, November 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Armory, 311 Broadway in Alexandria.

To donate, call 1-800-733-2767 or visit the website www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for information.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
