The Osakis tennis team has no regrets about a season that saw it finish with just one loss through 23 matches.
Unfortunately for the Silverstreaks, that loss came in the section finals against a perennially strong Staples-Motley team last Thursday. Osakis rolled through the first two rounds, beating Morris 7-0 and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 6-1 to set up the match everyone in Section 6A thought they would see.
The Silverstreaks came into the tournament as the top seed after going 20-0 through the regular season. But the Cardinals are the defending Class A consolation champions and know what it takes to win come tournament time.
The Cardinals used the strength of their singles lineup to set the tone. Aimee Allen got the only Osakis win in the lineup at fourth singles, beating Abby Smith 6-4, 6-2. Taylor Kraemer got off to a good start to take the first set of her third singles match, 6-3. Staples’ Luciana Zapata bounced back from that with 6-1, 6-1 wins to take the match. The Cardinals took the first and second spots in straight sets.
The Silverstreaks got their lone win in the doubles lineup from Janna Juntunen and Lauren Silbernick. The duo overcame a 6-1 loss in the first set by winning a tight second set, 7-6 (7-4). They went on to take the match 6-3 in the third. The Cardinals just had too much depth through the rest of the lineup, winning 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles and persevering for a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-1 win at the third spot.
