Osakis girls' tennis: Silverstreak doubles team heads to state

Eric Morken, Echo Press Kiera Zimmel (above) and her partner Sabrina Zimmel will open up the State Class A individual tennis tournament on Thursday at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Osakis’ Sabrina and Kiera Zimmel will be heading to the State Class A doubles tournament.

The Silverstreak duo earned runner-up honors in the Section 6A meet at Sartell Tuesday, falling to Andrea and Emma Koskiniemi of Staples-Motley 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.

The Zimmels defeated another Staples-Motley pair – Maggie O’Keefe and Mikayla Wing – in a hard-fought, three-set contest 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to earn their spot in the finals.

Action will begin for the Osakis pair on Thursday, October 28, at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Osakis singles player Brianne Giesler fell to Laura Hintzen of Sauk Centre in the semifinals, putting her in the third place match, where she defeated Parkers Prairie player Brenna Warren 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Warren had fallen to Kimmy Mrozek of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/USA in the semifinals 6-4, 6-0.

Opening round

Warren and Giesler advanced to the semifinals of the Section 6A individual tennis tournament with two wins last Friday.

Warren beat Jasmyn Sutton 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round before taking down Kady Buschette of Sauk Centre in a three-set thriller in the quarterfinals. Warren persevered after a second-set loss to win 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

Giesler made it look easy in her two wins. She beat Sara Roerck of LPGE in straight sets before doing the same against Nicole Anderson of West Central Area.

It was Sabrina and Kiera Zimmel of Osakis advancing to the semifinals of the doubles tournament. The Silverstreaks’ duo beat Darcey Aronson and Megan Wagner of Morris 6-0, 6-1. They then beat Rachel Riley and Ellen Stensrud of Minnewaska to advance to the semifinals.
