Mars takes home top payday at Fall Classic

Jimmy Mars was the big winner at the Viking Speedway’s 8th annual Fall Classic this past weekend as race fans filled the Douglas Country fairgrounds to take in the final event of the 2010 season.
Mars brought home a $4,000 payday when he edged Lance Matthees of Winona to win the Late Model feature. Mars worked his way up from the 18th starting spot to take the checkered flag.
Local driver Jason Thoennes of Garfield also took home a nice check for his performance in the Modified feature. Thoennes started in the front row and finished first to upend Dale Mathison for the $3,000 first-place prize. It was a fitting end to the season for Thoennes, who finished atop the final Modified standings at the local track. He totaled 892 points through Labor Day weekend, 74 points ahead of second-place finisher Dennis Bitzan of Farwell.
The Super Stock feature belonged to Dave Mass of Princeton. Mass outlasted the field of 25 racers and brought home a $2,000 check for holding off Cory Tammen of Clara City, who finished in second place.
Shane Sabraski took the Midwest Modified feature. The driver from Rice started in the eighth spot and passed the field to take the checkered flag and a $1,000 check.
Brian Swenson brought home $1,000 for winning the Street Stock feature. Swenson started in the first spot and held off Rusty Kollman to come away with the win.
Josh Abrahamson of Moorhead got things started with a feature win in his Mod Four. Abrahamson brought home a $750 purse for his efforts in holding off Rob VanMil, who finished in second place.
