Brandt Nelson, 35

Brandt Alan Nelson, 35, died Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.

Brandt was born in Bogotá, Columbia on December 23, 1974. He was soon adopted at 5 weeks to Keith and Georgia (Andreasen) Nelson and brought to his new home near Garfield. He was baptized on March 23, 1975 and later confirmed on May 14, 1989 at St. Luke’s Church in Garfield by the Rev. David Gran. Brandt attended Garfield Elementary School and graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria in 1993.

Brandt liked to hunt and fish with his dad and also watched sports, including the Twins, Vikings and Bears. After struggling with symptoms for several years, Brandt was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease in 2003. Although this disease drastically changed his life, he never complained about his disabilities. Brandt moved into New Beginnings Home in Starbuck in 2005. There he met many wonderful people who gave special care to him and his family. He loved his family and would always look forward to the many visits and hugs from his mother, grandmother, sister Shannon, and his niece and nephews. Brandt’s niece and nephews had a special place in his heart and he would take great pride in finding just the right gift for each of them. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his mother, Georgia Nelson of Kensington; sister, Shannon Nelson of Benson; niece and nephews, Marissa, Christian and Noah Bartz, all of Benson; grandmother, Arlene Andreasen; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and Chris Bartz of Benson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Keith Nelson; grandparents, George Andreasen, Edrald and Ruby Nelson; aunt, Sandi Bennett; and Ray Bakke.

A funeral service was held Monday, October 11 at St. Luke’s Church in Garfield with the Rev. David Gran and the Rev. David Wallin officiating. Audrey Aga, Greg Kapphahn and the St. Luke’s Choir provided the music. Karen Erickson gave a eulogy and Greg Bennett told special memories of Brandt.

Interment was at Oscar Lake Cemetery near Farwell. Casket bearers were Monica Kriesel, Linda Parrett, Mary Beth Bonhan, Lindsy Erickson, Kayla Kvam and Jane Moe.
