Angelina’s Restaurant in Alexandria is building a new bar addition.

A public hearing on the restaurant’s request for an on-sale liquor license was held at the September 27 Alexandria City Council meeting.

After no one objected to the request, the council voted unanimously to issue the license.

The restaurant, located along Highway 29 North, has been operating under a beer and wine license only. The new liquor license will take effect November 15, when the bar addition is expected to be completed.

Because the license isn’t for the full year, it will cost just $750, or one-sixth of the usual fee of $4,500. The restaurant will have to pay to renew the license for 2011.

Owner Robert Carlsen told the council that he receives three or four inquiries every week from customers asking if the restaurant serves liquor.

Having the license should also add to Angelina’s business of hosting Christmas parties, Carlsen said.

The addition measures about 36-by-40-feet and will be built onto the north end of the restaurant. It will remain open during construction.

Carlsen said he expects that the bar part will close nightly at 11 p.m.
