Card girls' soccer: Alexandria falls short against Brainerd

The Cardinal girls’ soccer team played one of its better games of the season but came up short in a 1-0 loss against conference heavyweight Brainerd.

Alexandria outshot the Warriors but wasn’t able to put anything in the back of the net. Brainerd goalkeeper Cami Anderson made 11 saves, while Alexandria’s Sarah Bruzek had seven. The only goal of the game came with 10 minutes left in the first half when a Brainerd pass deflected off an Alexandria defender and into the goal.

“Those fluky goals sometimes happen and are more a result of bad luck as much as anything else,” head coach Tom Roos said. “Both teams had good scoring chances. Chelsey Mistele clanked a shot off the cross bar in the second half, while Brainerd sent a number of shots over the net.

Anna Spanbauer, Claire Illies, Leah Stinson and Mistele all put pressure on the Brainerd defense with multiple shots. It wasn’t enough, though, as the loss dropped the Cardinals to 3-10-1 overall.

“Our record may not give us much to boast about,” Roos said. “But if we can continue to play games with that intensity and strong play, we will be a team to be reckoned with in playoffs.”
