Bicyclists will soon have another designated safe route to ride in Douglas County.
At Tuesday’s regular Douglas County Board meeting, commissioners approved a bike route designation and restricted parking resolution in regard to the reconstruction project along County Road 42.
The second phase of the reconstruction project is nearly completed, according to Dave Robley, Douglas County Public Works director.
And with its completion, Robley asked commissioners to adopt a resolution that designates County Road 42 from Parkside Road near Curt Felt Memorial Park to South Park Drive near the Carlos Cemetery as a bike route.
In addition, a no parking zone will be established and maintained along both sides of County Road 42 between Parkside Road and South Park Drive.
The resolution also authorized the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Alexandria Police Department to enforce the parking restrictions.
This year’s County Road 42 project stretches from Blakes by the Lakes to the Carlos/L’Homme Dieu Bridge. Portions of the road are still closed. Robley expects the project to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.
Much of the work completed on County Road 42 was a continuation of the work completed last year – the road was widened, a sidewalk put in and water main work completed. The city water main was installed from Blakes by the Lakes up to Bay Lane.
Robley noted that the county has an agreement with the Department of Natural Resources to do some reshaping of the public boat access, as well as paving the access.
