The Cardinal tennis team experienced no letdown after its big win over Brainerd last Tuesday night.
Alexandria had to wait a week to get back on the courts after rain forced it to cancel its scheduled match with Moorhead last Thursday. The Cardinals showed no signs of rust on their way to a 7-0 win over Little Falls on Tuesday.
“Little Falls is a young team and their strength is in their singles lineup,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “But our girls were at the top of their games, giving up a total of four games throughout the singles lineup. The doubles teams weren’t far behind as they surrendered just six total games.”
Jenna Galstad and Rachel Astrup were in complete control at first and second singles, respectively. Both players won with ease in 6-0, 6-0 matches. Tyra Quitmeyer was not far behind with a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Katie Basiago moved over to fourth singles and beat Carmen Backowski, 6-0, 6-3.
Brianna Ebert and Rebecca Lukes set the tone for the doubles lineup at the first spot. They took down Jamie Jenks and Vy Dihn, 6-1, 6-1. Kristen Schmidt and Ellie Bergstrand won 6-2, 6-1 before Brittany Holm and Kristen Sjostrand wrapped things up with a 6-1, 6-0 win at third doubles.
The Cardinals continue to play solid tennis as they get set for the start of section tournament play. They moved to 11-3 overall with the win.
“After you beat a good team like Brainerd, sometimes it can be difficult to follow it up with another solid performance,” Ronning said. “But the girls were focused and played nice tennis up and down the lineup.”
