Alexandria volleyball: Spuds too strong for Redbird girls
Alexandria was swept by Moorhead to drop the Cards to 5-5
The Moorhead volleyball team got a little revenge on Alexandria in a rematch of last season’s Section 8AAA title game on Tuesday night.
The last time these two teams met, Alexandria swept Moorhead to punch its ticket to the state tournament. This time it was the Spuds who returned the favor with seeding implications on the line in a 3-0 victory.
Both teams answered the bell through the first two sets. Moorhead stayed a step ahead of Alexandria through the first before securing a 25-22 win.
The second set was all Alexandria to start. The Cardinals positioned themselves to even things up at one apiece by jumping out to an 11-4 lead. That sent a message to the Spuds, who responded with six straight points to get back in the set. The two teams continued to battle back and forth before Moorhead completed the comeback with a late charge in a 25-21 win.
The Spuds carried the momentum of that win over into the third. They jumped on Alexandria from the get-go, going on to take the match with a 25-15 win.
Senior middle hitter Sam Trumm tried to keep up with the Spuds’ attack. She finished with nine kills and two blocks. Laurel Thompson and Amanda Christianson added six kills, while Allie Noetzelman led the team with 15 assists.
Moorhead’s balanced attack was just a little too much on this night. Four Spuds had at least seven kills with Abby Tietz leading the way with 11. Taylor Baldwin set them up on the net all night with 29 assists.
