Alexandria tennis: Redbird girls fall to Apollo in tennis 4-3
Alexandria swept doubles play, but lost all four in singles
The Cardinal tennis team swept the doubles lineup but got a taste of its own medicine in the singles lineup as St. Cloud Apollo edged Alexandria 4-3 in a Central Lakes Conference tilt last Thursday.
The Cardinals got straight set wins from all three of their doubles spots. Brianna Ebert and Rebecca Lukes set the tone with a 6-2, 6-1 win at first doubles. Kristen Schmidt and Brittany Holm followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win at second, while Kristen Sjostrand and Katie Basiago wrapped up things with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the third spot.
That made things interesting with one match left on the court. It came down to Alexandria’s Tyra Quitmeyer and Apollo’s Rachel Henning to decide which team would pick up the win. Quitmeyer rebounded from a 2-6 loss in the first set to win 7-5 in the second. Quitmeyer fell behind early in the final set and couldn’t climb her way back in as Henning secured the win with a 6-3 victory.
“We had our best lineup in place to give us the best chance to win at every spot,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “The girls played well but the singles players from Apollo are all seniors and have been solid players for several years now, and we have to commend them for their efforts and experience.”
The loss dropped Alexandria to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the CLC.
