Alexandria soccer: Card boys rack up another win
Alexandria held off St. Cloud Apollo 2-1
Peter Olson scored two goals before the half and the Alexandria boys’ soccer team held off a St. Cloud Apollo charge to take a 2-1 Central Lakes Conference win at Citizens Field last Thursday night.
The Cardinals got on the board early when Sam Johnson found Olson with a step on his defender. Olson brought the ball in with a defender on his hip before sending it past the Eagles’ keeper for a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, an Apollo foul in the penalty area gave Olson another shot. He stepped up to the penalty kick and sent it in for a 2-0 lead.
“At halftime, we talked about improving our overall play,” head coach David Vinje said. “We were uncharacteristically giving the ball away, making poor challenges and our ideas weren’t very good offensively and defensively. However, we found ourselves up two goals.”
Apollo came out with an aggressive approach in the second half. That pressure finally paid off with a penalty kick that was converted for a goal in the 60th minute. The Eagles continued to apply pressure, twice just missing on shots that hit the post, but Alexandria held on for its third win of the season.
“It was one of those nights where we took horrible touches, made bad passes, didn’t shoot the ball when we should have, dove recklessly into tackles, but still won,” Vinje said. “This is the beauty and the beast of soccer.”
The Cardinals moved to 3-2-2 and 3-1-1 in CLC play.
