Boys' soccer: Redbird boys romp to 5-1 win

Alexandria's victory improved the team to 2-1 in the CLC

The Alexandria boys’ soccer team finished with a flurry and coasted to a 5-1 win over Sauk Rapids on Saturday.

The Cardinals trailed after a header found the net for the Storm in the 10th minute. That lit a fire under the Cardinals, who answered with five straight unanswered goals to coast to the win. They controlled the ball in the first half with 43 passes but had just a 1-1 tie to show for it at the break.

Senior forward Jon Lewis got them to that point with his first of two straight goals that gave his team its first lead. He sprinted past the Sauk Rapids defense in the 21st minute and sent one by the keeper to tie things up at one. Seven minutes into the second half, Lewis struck again. He took a pass from midfielder Peter Olson before Lewis again beat the Storm keeper for a lead Alexandria did not relinquish.

The pressure the Cardinals continued to apply paid off again in the 60th minute. Senior Zac Bowman took a corner kick of Aaron Billberg and headed it in for a 3-1 lead.

That sparked a flurry of goals in the final minutes. John Vinje took a pass from Tanner Gustafson inside the 18 and sent it past the keeper. Just 30 seconds later, Vinje again got in on a scoring play. He sent an assist to Olson at the top of the 18 before Olson sent a hard shot past an outstretched Storm keeper to put the finishing touches on the win.

The victory moved the Cardinals above the .500 mark in the Central Lakes Conference at 2-1. They moved to 2-2-1 overall.
