Baseball: Carlos Cougars fall to Blazers, still advance to state
The Carlos Cougars struggled against Bertha on Sunday, but, even with their 11-3 loss to the Blazers, the Cougars advanced to the State Amateur baseball tournament this weekend.
Seven fielding errors contributed to the loss as the Blazers avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to Carlos in the tournament that sent them to the loser’s bracket.
Bertha scored early, plating a pair of runs in the first inning, but the Cougars came right back to score two of their own in the bottom of the first as Brad Nyberg drove in Ben Bruggeman for the first score and Jamie Thoennes hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that brought Ryan Severson across the plate.
Bertha continued to notch runs, adding three in the second, four in the fourth and one each in the fifth and seventh innings before Carlos could add just a single run in the bottom of the eighth, that on a RBI single by Thoennes that scored Severson.
Bruggeman took the loss as he pitched the first three and a third innings, giving up seven runs, three earned, on four hits and seven walks. He struck out three.
Spencer Timm was the only Cougar to collect more than one hit as he went 2-for-4.
Carlos is slated to take on Ada at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday in Spicer.
