Classic Clippers perfect, head to state tourney; Whitecaps are also in
After winning all three games last weekend, the Classic Clippers will face the Veseli Vulcans at 1 p.m. in Veseli tomorrow, Saturday, August 21 in the Minnesota Senior Men’s State Amateur baseball tournament.
The Classic Clippers played a doubleheader in Nisswa against the Nisswa Merchants, winning both games 6-0 and 13-3, with pitchers Greg Serum and Lee Backhaus picking up wins. On Sunday, the Clippers squeezed past Menagha-Sebeka 2-1. After giving up a run in the sixth, Joe Korkowski earned the pitching win thanks to Bill Ziegler, who scored on a two-out, bottom of the seventh Relics’ error.
The Clippers were seeded No. 3 in the A-AA tournament after finishing with a 12-0 record. The Shakopee Chiefs were first at 15-0 and the St. Peter Saints were second at 14-1.
The Veseli Vulcans were 14th with an 8-7 record.
If the Clippers win on Saturday, they will continue in the AA tournament. If they lose, it would drop them into the Class A tournament.
Either way, the Clippers will play a second game on Sunday afternoon in Union Hill.
The Carlos Whitecaps, who finished with a 5-7 record, will play in the B-C brackets after being seeded sixth.
They will play the Minneapolis Bombers at 5 p.m. in Veseli on Saturday.
The Urbank Goldtimes will play in the B-C tournament as well, facing Edina.
