Chaska’s Lincoln Johnson may have been the smallest in stature but his game proved to be better than his older counterparts in the Junior 10-12 Division championship flight.
Johnson, at just 10 years old, battled 12-year-old Sam Franklin of Maple Grove and persevered in a tight match for a 2-up win.
Franklin was the division medalist after shooting a 42 in qualifying, but Johnson never trailed on Saturday on his way to the win. He finally broke through on their fourth hole by taking No. 13 with a par. Franklin responded with a win on the 14th before Johnson answered right back with another par win on 15.
It’s a lead he never lost again. Both players halved the next two holes with bogeys to set up an intense final hole. Franklin needed to take 18 to force a playoff. Instead, Johnson found a way to make bogey and pick up a win on the hole to put the finishing touches on his championship.
