16C baseball: Bluedogs still standing in 16CNext round of play is set for Saturday
The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs are the only team left standing from the Resorters West in the Region 16C baseball tournament.
The Bluedogs won two of three games this past weekend, winning their opening game 18-3 against Blackduck and 7-2 over division rival Ashby in their third game of the weekend. Sandwiched between there was a 6-1 loss to Fergus Falls out of the Countryside Division.
The Bluedogs will try to make their way through the losers’ bracket when they face the Vergas Loons this Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Menahga. A win would advance them to an 8 p.m. game that same day against Midway with a state tournament berth on the line and an opportunity to play for the region championship.
Alexandria and Ashby don’t have that opportunity anymore after both teams fell from the tournament last weekend.
Vergas handed the Senators their first of two straight losses in an 11-6 game on Saturday. Ashby also lost its opening game 21-0 to Midway.
That set up an elimination game between Alexandria and Ashby later that day. The A’s edged Alexandria 5-4 before eventually falling to Brandon-Evansville on Sunday.
If the Bluedogs can advance past the next two games, they would take on the Fergus Falls Hurricanes in the region championship game this Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Nimrod.
