David was born in Alexandria on January 25, 1961 to Morris and Jeanne (Landa) Ellingson. He grew up in the Alexandria community and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1979. He then entered the U.S. Army, serving his country from 1979 to 1983. He also served in the military police and some time in Germany.

Returning to Alexandria, Duke began employment at Garden Center Lanes, where he could continue bowling, a sport he loved. He was able to achieve a lifetime dream of bowling a 300 game. In the early 2000s, David began employment for Orrin and Carol Foslien, whom he also considered part of his family.

He is survived by his two daughters, Kelsey (Nathan) Ellingson, Krista (Neko) Ellingson; and grandson, Mekhai Tipton. Also, David has his mother, Jeanne, and seven siblings surviving him. His sisters are Carmen Rohde, Linda Kirk, Joni Aslagson and Jeri Capper. His brothers are Michael Rohde, Pat Ellingson and Dan Ellingson.

A funeral service will be held Friday, August 6 at 11 a.m. at Living Waters Church with the Rev. David Gran officiating. Music will be provided by Bruce and Audrey Aga and Orrin Foslien.

Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria with pallbearers being Charlie Meyer, Kevin Sullivan, Al Klimek, Ted Boys, Tim Mullen and Thomas Parrow. Honorary pallbearers are Orrin Foslien, Carol Foslien, Bud Fitzgerald and Eddie Thompson. The American Legion Post 87, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936 and the Minnesota National Guard Honors will accord military honors.
