Letter - Proud of recount process

To the editor:

I continue to be concerned about the use of splinter groups to slander Minnesota’s handling of the 2008 Senatorial race.

At this point, Norm Coleman is silent about the election; no public official is willing to own the allegation that there was widespread voter fraud.

Why is this? This is because they would have to provide public evidence of such voter fraud; and, it does not exist. Minnesota Majority is a partisan group. Their accusations are insulting to our county auditor and election judges. Minnesota Majority opposed legislation, SF 763 and HF 1053, in 2009, that would help detect and prevent felons from voting. Why have Coleman’s lawyers abandoned the legal appeal system? They know there are no grounds for a legal appeal. Now, rather than following the legal process for redress of grievances, these slanderous comments are being spread by groups that have no legal evidence to refute the decision of the judges.

Minnesota has an election system that operated with total transparency and comprehensive communication. Minnesota Public Radio and Echo Press deserves a big “Bravo!” for objectively keeping us informed; and the office of the secretary of state for cooperating with them.

I was very proud of Minnesota during the time of the recount and the process that was followed. Volunteers from both sides of the aisle, election judges and local officials, and the office of the secretary of state, worked together to ensure that the recount was accurate and transparent. Cooperation has always been a constant theme in the Minnesota culture. Let’s hang onto that; and, let’s use the legal system to resolve our allegations. Let’s use the legislative system to resolve issues in the Minnesota election process. And, let’s all vote on August 10 to demonstrate our involvement and our commitment to an even better Minnesota.
