Golf: Vangsness, Sholts compete in MGA Junior Championship
Alexandria’s Casey Vangsness and Chris Sholts were among the 120 contenders in the 84th Minnesota State Junior Boys’ Championship last week at Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes.
Vangsness tied for 38th with a 4-over-par 76 on day one then carded a 1-over-par 73 on day two to finish tied for 25th overall.
Sholts tied for 46th at 5-over-par 77 on day one, then shot a 2-over-par 74 on day two finish tied for 33rd.
Thomas Strandemo of Fargo, North Dakota, won the title as he finished 4-under-par at 140, shooting rounds of 69 and 71.
In all, five players finished under par.
In the 65th Minnesota Junior Girls’ State Championship, Minnewaska’s Allie Ostrander finished in fifth with rounds of 75 and 77 for a total 152, five strokes behind champion Anna Laorr of Hazeltine National Golf Club. Ostrander was in second place in the championship flight with rounds of 37 and 38 for a 75 after day one.
Minnewaska’s Sam Falk finished 12 back of the champion at 159. She was four back of the leader at 39-39-78 in the championship flight being played at Burl Oaks Golf Club in Minnetrista.
Sara Detlefsen of Somerby Golf Club was second after falling to Laorr in a three-hole playoff for the championship.
